J.P. Dennis

SongWriter and Composer

The Journey

Hello!

My name is J.P. Dennis.  I started my musical training in the sixth grade in Rockwood, Tennessee.  I played the saxophone in the marching, concert, and jazz bands throughout high school.  I started taking piano lessons from Ms. Tina Pemberton in January of 2003 and wrote my first piece shortly after.  I quickly became interested in composition and was encouraged by my band director, Christopher Metcalfe, to purchase the Finale music notation software.  Basically, I was hooked after that.  I had several performances of my compositions starting with the Rockwood Band.

Awards:

  • Acceptance and scholarship to the 2006 Brevard Music Center summer institute and festival.  (Studying composition under Robert Adridge and Robert Palmer.)
  • 1st Place in the 2006 Roane State Community College Academic Festival for the piano performance of Sonata in C# Minor, Mov. III - "Fury"
  • Finalist in the 2006 Central Florida Young Composer Challenge  (The War of Fantasia)  Hosted by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. (Youth Symphony)
  • 2nd Place in the 2005 Roane State Community College Academic Festival for the piano performance of Majestuoso.

Other information:

In 2007, I served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Portland, Oregon.  Click here to read my testimony of the Gospel.

I am currently attending Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, TN.  (2009-2013)  I study under Dr. Greg Danner (composition) and Cathrine Godes (piano).
